I remember my mom asking me, “Who was that young man that danced with me after church?” This was in the early days of Westside, when the service was over and the chairs were empty, and the musicians were jamming. My mom was kind of dancing to the music by herself until Bob came over and offered himself as a partner. Lovely image for me.

My life is better because one day my mom signed me up for the year round swim team. The rest is history, and what a wild ride it was. He was a good man.

The world has lost a great teacher. Bob, you taught me how to swim, how to drive a stick shift, how to paddle a canoe, how to fly fish and how to "go crabbin" the easy way. i have so many fond memories but my favorite has to be crabbing. For those that never got to experience crabbing with Bob, it involved getting up at 2am, donning hip waders and a head lamp, and walking up up the shallow part of the bay with a rake and 5 gal bucket in hand. As you walk you peer down into the water and watch for crab moving out with the tide. When one slides by, you stop it with your rake and then yell a lot "I got one! I got one! It's super fat!" until Bob could wade over and pick it up from the back and put it in your bucket. That was a night I will never forget.

Bob never had any of his own kids, but that didn't stop him from loving the ones that came into his life. He was always there for me. When I needed a break from my own kids or just with what he thought was the most helpful advice (even if he was a little crazy at times). He was generous too. Always willing and ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Our shared birthday won't be the same without you Bob. I hope you have found peace. And if peace isn't what's waiting for us, I hope you are faithfully battling the currents of the River Styx. They don't know you're coming, so it will be a good surprise. Rest well gentle giant. You are loved. You made the world better. And you will be sorely missed.

Photo: Remember that one time you took me fly fishing in Tillamook? We didn't catch anything but I had fun. There was a weird caterpillar crawling on my backpack. That's Bob in the river.
