M. Gary Shanks, 82 of Lebanon died at Evergreen Hospice House, Albany, Oregon on May 19, 2018.
Gary was born June 4, 1935 in Lebanon, Oregon, the son of Luther and Roberta (Gregson) Shanks. He lived with his family in the Providence area prior to moving to the Tennessee Road area. He graduated from Lebanon Union High School in 1953 and married Gloria Athey in Lebanon June 12, 1953.
Gary loved his family and enjoyed many life-long and neighborhood friends on Tennessee Road where he lived for most of his life. He was a member of Waterloo Chapel where he was music director and deacon.
Gary loved to sing and play baritone horn. Through the years he was choir director at Lebanon First Baptist, Albany First Baptist and Waterloo Chapel. From his teen years and through his life he sang with many male quartets, trios and chorus groups.
Gary’s faith was of upmost importance to him and was the measure of how he lived his life. He filled many roles and positions in the church through his life. In addition to music ministry he was a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, a deacon, developed an outreach bus ministry for Sunday School youth and was a High School Baptist Youth group sponsor. Gary would reach out to people and speak to them about his faith and salvation in Jesus Christ.
Gary worked at McPherson Saw Mill, was a lathe operator for Western Veneer/Willamette Industries-Griggs Division and did finish cabinet work for B & J Builders. He also was owner/operation of Cedar Grove Dairy where he developed a fine herd of Jersey cows receiving the Oregon Dairy Association of the Year Award along with many Quality Merit Awards and Recognitions.
He enjoyed being a 4-H Livestock club member as a boy and was a great support for his four children who were also involved in the Tennessee 4-H clubs with a variety of livestock, sewing, cooking and floral projects.
Gary enjoyed playing games and sports with his children. For several years he coached his four children’s Little League Ball teams. He also watched and was an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren’s sports events. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Braves fan for many years.
Gary is survived by son Ron and wife, Kate Shanks of Albany, daughter Debbie Shanks of Lebanon, daughter Jo and husband, Ken Powell of Crabtree, and son Ken and wife, Marianne Shanks of Marysville, WA, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren, brother Rod and wife Lauretta Shanks of Lebanon and sister, Ladonna Shanks of Eugene and special friend Mary Glaser of Scio.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria (Athey) Shanks and his parents.
A memorial service will be held Saturday May 26, 1:00 P.M. at Lebanon First Baptist Church (211 E. Vine St. Lebanon). A private interment was in the Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
