Obituary for Benjamin Peter Duerr
Benjamin Peter Duerr passed away on March 6, 2018 at his home in Lebanon, Oregon, at the age of 84.
He was born on September 23, 1933 in Tishomingo, Oklahoma to Theodore and Elizabeth (Winkler) Duerr, the 10th of 11 children. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He attended high school in Charleston, Arkansas and in 1954 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. On July 11, 1955 he married the love of his life, Rose Suing, daughter of Ludwig and Gertrude (Hoesing) Suing, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Lebanon. He worked for over 28 years at the Champion International Plywood Mill in Lebanon. After “retiring” he spent his life gardening, fishing and traveling around the country visiting family and friends. He was always selflessly helping others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Theodore “Pete” Duerr, Andrew Duerr, Edward “Al” Duerr, Patrick “Mike” Duerr, Joseph “Joe” Duerr, and Thomas “Tommy” Duerr; and his sisters Cecilia “Sis” Adams and Pauline Garcia; and one grandchild, Jessica Leigh Greenly.
Ben is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rose and his loving dog, Lilly; two sons, Mark Duerr and wife Annette (Nydigger) of Lebanon and Ronnie Duerr and wife Monica (Bartlett) of Lebanon; and five daughters, Cindy (Duerr) Luehring and husband Mike of Lebanon, Jane (Duerr) Moran and husband Milton of Sweet Home, Teresa (Duerr) Greenly and husband Frank of Lebanon, Lori (Duerr) Post and husband Eugene of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Mary (Duerr) Kuhns and husband Mike of Lebanon. His grandchildren are Scott Luehring of Eugene, Jill (Luehring) Walker and husband Pete of Silverton, Sara (Moran) Windom and husband Mike of Sweet Home, Stephanie (Moran) Taylor and husband Jeremy of Lebanon, Shane Luehring and wife Hila of Rishon, Israel, Sean Luehring and his wife Jenny of Lebanon, Leslie (Moran) Armstrong of Lebanon, Ryan Greenly and wife Sara of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jackie (Duerr) Scanlon and husband Tom of Fulton, New York, Jenny (Duerr) Stanton and husband Drew of Roy, Washington, Ashley (Post) Rausch and husband John of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Blain Kuhns and wife Emily of Lebanon, Drew Greenly of Portland, Clinton Moran and wife Julia of Boise, Idaho, Nick Post and wife Kyrie of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Alex Kuhns and wife Sinialyn of Lebanon, Justin Post of Rogers, Arkansas, Chad Greenly and wife Emily of Portland, Russell Duerr of Lebanon, Matt Duerr of West Palm Beach, Florida, Cassie (Kuhns) Kragness and husband Matt of Lebanon, Marcus Greenly and wife Mackenzie of Lebanon, Kimberly (Duerr) Sansom and husband Quinn of Lebanon and Benjamin “Ben” Duerr of Portland. He also had 41 great-grandkids. To them, he was lovingly called “Papa Ben.”
He is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” (Duerr) Post and husband Matt of Altus, Arkansas and Mary Weiden of Narrowsburg, New York.
Ben will always be remembered for his loving hugs, his strong work ethic and his fierce love of God, family and country. He was a master gardener who found great joy in sharing his harvest of plenty with others, especially his raspberry jam and famous grape juice. Over the years, he planted thousands of flower bulbs along Brewster Road and down Mt. Hope Drive.
Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 7:00 PM, Monday, March 12, at St. Edward Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 13, at also at St. Edward Catholic Church. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
